Regional Economy is Thriving

At the end of last month, I had the opportunity to attend an Economic Development Update Seminar hosted by the Bozeman Area Chamber of Commerce. The quantity and quality of pertinent information from an array of speakers provided much food for thought, and I wanted to share some of the highlights with you.

Quality schools are paramount for a town to attract and sustain an educated workforce and community. Rob Watson, Superintendent for the Bozeman Public Schools, and Steve Johnson, Deputy Superintendent of Operations, both spoke about the public school system.  Bozeman currently serves over 6,700 students and consists of eight elementary schools, two middle schools, a high school, and a charter program. The passing of the bond for the construction of a second high school was necessary for the steadily growing enrollment. Exciting plans were unveiled for the creation of another top notch high school which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2020.

Bob Hietala is Dean of Gallatin College MSU, and he presented an overview.  Considered the fastest growing college in Montana, it offers a well-rounded selection of programs that can result in Workforce Degrees. The latest enrollment statistics show more than 900 total students, with 300 seeking degrees.  Course offerings range from two-year Associate of Applied Science degrees in categories such as aviation, design drafting technology, interior design and photonics, as well as one-year Certificate of Applied Science degrees in bookkeeping, CNC machining technology, medical assisting, welding technology and more.  The selection keeps growing with two new programs – culinary arts and information technology technician – being introduced this upcoming fall. The success of Gallatin College shows the need for non-university learning opportunities and enhances our community with a highly trained workforce.

Story Mill Park

When people are asked to give examples of what makes their home community stand out amongst others, one factor that often comes to the forefront is the quality and abundance of parks and recreational services that are in place. Parks provide space for families or groups of all ages and economic status to meet and enjoy the outdoors.  They are very important in the social aspect of determining quality of life.

The value of parks is also included in the economic sphere. The real estate market shows its appreciation of parks and open space by the fact that many people will pay a higher price for homes located near these desirable amenities. This "park premium" results in increased property values and, in turn, leads to higher property tax revenues for our city. Ready access to parks and open space offers a key amenity that attracts businesses and employees and promotes visitors to spend extra time here, fueling the local economy. And recreation programs can contribute to the operating costs of maintaining the parks themselves, while using the areas for sporting or music events can bring in out-of-area revenue.

Finally, parks are known for their overall health benefits. Research has shown that access to parks improves both physical and mental health, resulting in medical care cost savings.   Increased air quality, having a safe and pleasant place for physical activity, capturing stormwater, and connection to nature are all measurable, quality of life benefits of parks.

We are fortunate here in Bozeman to have access to numerous neighborhood parks and miles of trails to choose from when we are looking for quality time outdoors. The City of Bozeman's website reports 42 public parks with 52 miles of trails/ sports fields/ open space within our city limits. Partnerships are a key component of keeping these areas properly updated and maintained. One very exciting project that will be coming to realization is the Story Mill Community Park.

Carissa Paulson - ERA Landmark Market Watch - Vacation Season

Vacation Season

As we move toward what will ideally be another stellar tourist season, those who are heading to Southwest Montana may still be firming up their travel plans, including where they will stay while on vacation. The old days of motel versus hotel or perhaps a bed and breakfast are gone. The newer model of accommodations still includes those choices, but adds in the addition of vacation rentals.

It is both well-known and documented that tourism plays a vital role in our state's economy. The preliminary data for year-end 2016, provided by the Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research via the University of Montana, credits nonresident visitors spending an estimated $3.49 billion in the state. Of that total, 14% - approximately $488 million- is spent on lodging. This number exemplifies why "where to stay" is big business.  You can further add to those figures the in-state spending as we Montanans travel and experience our own vast state.

Yellowstone National Park is of particular consequence in our own backyard. Visitation numbers for 2016 once again broke records, weighing in at 4,257,177 visits. The out-of-area guests chose to either camp in the park, stay at lodging within the park, or find accommodations in the gateway cities. This year is anticipated to be another record year, so making reservations right away is highly recommended.

Intermountain Opera
Presents Tosca by Giacomo Puccini

May 12th at 7pm and May 14th at 3pm
The Willson Auditorium

A journey of ill-suited and ill-fated lovers through the dark and secretive halls and edges of cathedrals, palaces and prisons, through Puccini's both vibrant and mournful lyrical score. Director Linda Brovsky and Conductor Dean Williamson will carry the audience to the hauntingly beautiful hidden corners of Rome, where infatuation and devotion twist and twine in contention. Featuring Baritone Corey Crider as the iniquitous Baron Scarpia, Tenor John Pickle as the doomed Cavaradossi, and Soprano Kara Shay Thomson as the heart-rending, alluring Tosca, this story of an agonizing and devoted love loss will shatter the hearts of romantics and their cynics.

Bass-Baritone Thomas Hammons joins the cast as Sacristan, along with Tenor Torrance Blaisdell as Spoletta, and returning Intermountain Opera favorite Bass Branch Fields as Angelotti and Sciarrone. With a chorus of local singers that includes a children's choir (appearing for the first time on the Intermountain Opera stage in nearly two decades), the company of Tosca will
hold the audience into a breathtaking embrace they will
feel no desire to struggle to be released.
